I would like to thank the many people that made it possible for the spring sports season to run smoothly. First, I would like to thank Mr. Bales and Mrs. Mize for their help and support throughout the season. They were always there to assist with anything. Second, I would like to thank the coaches who have worked with me to keep the athletes safe and in shape, so they can continue to participate at the highest level. We had our share of injuries this year and we appreciate their cooperation and patience when dealing with injured athletes. Third, I would like to thank the eleven student athletic trainers, who made the spring season a good one. They were hard working and dedicated to what they were doing on a daily basis to prepare our athletes for practice and games. Over the course of the season, there were injuries to care for, but we were lucky to not have any catastrophic injuries. I would also like to thank Kelly Blank for assisting with the Athletic Training duties. She has helped ease the burden of the daily training room duties and we greatly appreciate her assistance. Finally, I would like to wish my senior student athletic trainers the best of luck in their future endeavors!
The Boys' Track Team wrapped up a very successful year with two members participating in the IHSAA State Track Meet on June 5th in Bloomington . Lead by seniors Dave Weiand(Jumps & Hurdles), Zach Wiersma (Distance), Kurt Monix (Pole Vault), Jake Belt, Tom Moore, Cody Midgett (Sprints), and Trevor Kersey & Brian Demario (Throws) the team posted a 15-1 dual meet record, finishing a perfect 6-0 in Northwest Crossroads Conference meets. Along the way, the Runnin', Jumpin' and Throwin' Devils picked up first place trophies at the Lake Central Indoor Invite, Hobart Little Five, Munster 's Woody Woodrick Invite and the Lowell Relays. I would like to thank all of the seniors and athletes for making 2009 a great year. Without your commitment, drive and leadership, none of this would be possible. I would also like to thank Brian Jones and Steve Kouimanis for volunteering your time and expertise to lead the throwers as well as Robert Wong for his expertise in the pole vault. A huge thank you to Don Bales, Karen Mize , Patti MacCormick and everyone involved with Athletic Booster Club for giving us the support, time and equipment that allows us to be at the top in what it is we do.
Lastly, all the kudos to Assistant Jake Rakoczy , the motor behind the machine, I simply say, Thank You.
The girls had a great season in 2009. Fielding a very young squad, the Lady Red Devils gave great competition everywhere they went. During the regular season, the girls placed 4th at the Lake Central Invite, 2nd at the Munster Invite, 2nd at the Calumet Invite, and 7th at the Rensselaer Relays. After a disappointing end of the regular season loss to KV, The Lady Red Devils pulled off a big upset by beating the Cougars at the conference meet and securely a 2nd place finish overall in conference. That is the highest finish from a girls track team in the history of the program. We have 2 conference champions, Alli Manchester in the high jump and Nicki Thiel in the pole vault. Nicki also tied the school record in the pole vault with a jump of 10'0". Natasha Darcy set a new School record in the 800 with a time of 2:26.2. The team followed that great meet with a strong performance at sectionals, finishing 4th out of 13 teams and finishing just 3 points behind perennial power West Side. The team advanced several runners and 2 relay teams, they are listed below. The team loses some strong seniors but there are only a handful of them. The future looks bright for this team as the freshman and sophomore class made up the vast majority of the competitors on the roster.
Sectionals:
Alli Manchester in high jump (4th) and long jump (4th)
Natasha Darcy in the 800 (3rd)
Courtney Stahl in Shot put (4th)
Nicki Thiel in pole vault (2nd)
Jordan Lump in 100 hurdles (4th)
The 4x800 relay team of Becca Goeders, Becca Gruhlke, Natasha Darcy, and Vanessa Sams (4th)
The 4x100 relay team of Mallory Lampa, Brigitte Dewes, Alyssa Kersey, and Alli Manchester (4th)
